WTG App

The main product of Work and Travel Guide: one platform that takes travelers from planning their Working Holiday year to finding jobs and friends in Australia. It is built once in React and shipped as a web app and as native iOS and Android apps with Capacitor, backed by a Django REST API. Built as part of the product team, I worked across the React frontend, the mobile apps, and the Django backend.

Prepare:

• Step-by-step guide for the whole Working Holiday year, with progress tracking, step detail pages, and tickable subtasks
• Onboarding questionnaire that tailors the experience to each traveler

Work:

• CV Creator with four PDF templates, one-click translation, and sharing to a talent pool so employers can find you
• Job board with filters (location, 88-day visa eligibility, own transport), job details, applications, and application tracking
• AI application assistant that writes personalized application emails to employers with your CV attached, sending only what you review and approve
• Guided calling mode: pick a location and industries on a map, then work through matching companies one by one and log each call

Travel:

• Day-by-day route planner on an interactive map, with drive and visit times, overnight stops, drag-and-drop reordering, and warnings for overlong days
• Activity booking with an activity-finder quiz, cart, and checkout

Community:

• Travelmate: swipe-based matching with likes, chats, and rich profiles, plus blocking, reporting, and an invisible mode
• Meetups that travelers can create and join, free, pay-what-you-want, or with a fixed entry fee
• Photo and video contest with community voting and a leaderboard

Coaching and Premium:

• 1:1 coaching with booked calls, a direct chat with your coach, and an urgent SOS message that shares your location
• Premium subscriptions with monthly and yearly plans, Stripe on web and in-app purchases on iOS
• Referral program and partner dashboard

For employers:

• Talent pool search, best-match candidates, job posting with paid promotion, and applicant management
• Team tools for invited employees, including time tracking and payslips

Messaging:

• Real-time WebSocket chat with voice messages, attachments, a media viewer, and reply threads

Mobile (iOS & Android):

• One React codebase shipped natively to the App Store and Google Play
• Push notifications that open the right screen when tapped
• Native camera, file saving and sharing (e.g. CV PDFs), and clipboard
• Location-aware features for nearby jobs, travelmates, and meetups
• Over-the-air updates for fast fixes without waiting for store review

Engineering:

• English and German (i18n), with automatic language detection
• TanStack Query and Zustand for data and state, React Hook Form and Zod for forms
• Leaflet and OpenStreetMap for all maps
• Two-factor authentication (TOTP)
• Role-based areas for travelers, employers, and staff in one app, behind route guards
• Around 400 unit test files (Vitest) and end-to-end tests (Playwright)
• Error tracking with session replay, and product analytics
